The Twitter stories which made the history

  • Online activist and Google executive Wael Ghonim became a hero for Egypt’s anti-government movement after he sent a tweet that would forever change his life: "I said one year ago that the Internet will change the political scene in Egypt and some friends made fun of me." Ghonim was later blindfolded and detained for 12 days for organizing protests against the Mubarak government. His disappearance became a main focus of the protests in Cairo. After he was released he said, "If you want to liberate a government, give them the Internet.”
  • When computer programmer Shohaib Athar, 33, woke up in the middle of the night after hearing hovering helicopters, he turned to Twitter. Little did he know he had inadvertently live-tweeted the military raid on the Osama bin Laden compound. “Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM (is a rare event),” Athar said. His message later received global media attention.
  • Stefanie Gordon was on a plane from New York to Palm Beach, Fla. when she took a few pictures and a video of the Space Shuttle Endeavour soaring into the sky from a whole new viewpoint. After she posted them to Twitter, her pictures became a media sensation. “Here's another Photo of the shuttle from my plane. http://twitpic.com/4yg6hs,” Gordon tweeted.
  • Turkish TV news anchor Okan Bayulgen used Twitter to send along emergency information after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit Van, Turkey in October. One of his Twitter followers tweeted him the address of people still trapped. Bayulgen sent the message to relief workers who were able to rescue two people trapped in the rubble.
